Since early 2020, the virus Covid-19 has inundated the world. Caused by SARS-CoV-2, the virus triggers a respiratory tract infection that has the potential to be deadly. One of the many things learned about this disease is how the virus passes from one person to another. It is essential to take precautions to avoid catching the virus, even when you have your car towed. Here are a few ways you can reduce your chances of catching Covid-19 before and during your tow.
1. Keep Your Hands Cleaned and Sanitized
Keeping your hands cleaned and sanitized before, during, and after getting in and out of your vehicle will keep you from spreading any germs you pick up from outside surfaces. Although transmission from surfaces is low, the risk is still there.
Depending on the surface you have had contact with, the virus may live anywhere from a few hours to several days. For example, if you touch an infected gas pump before getting into your vehicle, you run the risk of transferring the virus to your steering wheel. If your steering wheel is plastic, vinyl, or leather, the virus could remain there for
2 to 3
days.
2. Clean the Interior Surfaces of Your Vehicle
Would you be surprised to discover that the interior of your vehicle may harbor as many as
700
different types of bacteria? It is estimated that your steering wheel can be four times dirtier than a public bathroom toilet seat.
Wiping down your interior surfaces regularly can reduce your risk of Covid-19. Numerous disinfecting wipes on the market make this easy, but you can also 70% Isopropyl alcohol.
When cleaning your car, focus on all of your high-tough areas. These include:
- Seat belts buckles
- Gear shift lever
- Radio knobs
- Temperature controls
- Touch screens
- Rearview mirrors
- Armrests
- Sunroof buttons
- Turn and wiper signals
- Key fobs and more
Always test any wipes or products you are using on an out of sight area first. Testing your products will ensure they are not damaging to your interior.
3. Arrange for Alternate Transportation
Before Covid-19, when you called for a tow truck, you could assume they would pick you and your car up off the side of the road. Catching a ride is no longer the case. Many companies will no longer allow a tow truck driver to give you a ride to protect their drivers from the virus.
Arranging for alternate transportation can also help keep you safe from any germs previous customers may have exposed to your driver to. If you call a car company instead of friends or family, look for one performing cleaning precautions between customers. Many car companies will require you and the driver to wear masks while in the vehicle.
4. Arrange for a Contactless Pickup
The wrecker company you call may or may not require you to be present when towing your vehicle. Either way, make your pick-up as contactless as possible. Consider placing your keys in your car prior to the wrecker arriving.
Ask the wrecker company if you can electronically fill out any required forms using your cell phone. Filling out your forms this way will help reduce any face-to-face contact needed with the driver. When communicating in person, attempt to maintain a distance of at least
6 feet
between you and the person you are communicating with.
