How to Keep Your Car From Getting Stuck

Towing Service — Car Stuck In The Snow in Haltom City, TX
At one time or another, you may be forced to drive in rough or difficult terrain. Whether this terrain involves snow, mud, dirt, sand, or gravel, the last thing you want is to get your car stuck.

When you know you'll travel on rough terrain, you should try to have the number of a towing service handy, just in case. Hopefully, though, you'll be able to avoid getting stuck altogether if you can follow a few simple tips.

Deflate Your Tires a Bit

One simple tip that can help you a lot is to slightly deflate your tires before traveling on treacherous terrain.

When you let just a little air out of each tire, you'll enjoy better traction, helping your vehicle to glide along more smoothly and making it less likely to get stuck.

Deflation is just a temporary measure, however, and you should remember to inflate the tires to ideal levels again once you're past the rough terrain.

Look for One-Way Tracks

Sometimes, the easiest way to tell if you're likely to get stuck is to see if other people have done the same thing.

When you come upon an area that looks difficult, such as a patch of deep mud or snow, check for vehicle tracks. If the tracks only go one way- into the area but not out- you can assume that others have gotten stuck before, which means you're likely to get stuck too. Don't take chances in terrain that has given other people trouble if you can help it.

Go Forward

If you have to drive into a spot where you're at high risk for getting stuck, remember this simple trick you can try.

Simply drive your vehicle up just a little further from where you want to start and then back up into your desired space. As long as no one parks in front of you, you can use your tracks as a way to move forward and gain some momentum, enabling you to get your vehicle out more easily and reducing the chances of getting stuck.

Don't Go Too Slow

You’ll naturally want to drive a little more slowly and be a little more cautious when you drive through tricky terrain. However, make sure you don't go too slowly. Try to maintain an even, steady speed as you drive. That way, you won't lose momentum and risk having your vehicle get stuck.

Avoid Driving in Tracks

When you see another vehicle's tracks in deep mud or snow, you may want to drive on those tracks. Perhaps someone has already blazed the way for you.

While this method can sometimes be helpful with keeping your vehicle from slipping and sliding, it's also an easy recipe for getting stuck. Those tracks will get deeper and deeper the more people drive on them, and you could end up the unlucky one who gets stuck.

While you can use your own shallow tracks to assist with traction and momentum, never drive through someone else's in deep terrains.

Don't Let Your Wheels Spin

One final tip to help you avoid getting stuck is to never allow your wheels to spin.

When spinning happens, ease off of the gas slowly to see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't, then you can try pressing down on the brakes gently.

Whatever you do, don't allow your wheels to spin continually. All this does is dig your vehicle deeper into the ground below it, which is a surefire recipe for getting super stuck.

While following these tips should greatly reduce your likelihood of getting stuck, problems can always occur. Thus, if, despite our advice, you find your vehicle stuck in a tough spot, remember you can always call on our professional towing help here at AA Wrecker Service
