Tips for Leaving Your Vehicle to Be Towed

Admin • August 8, 2018
Towed Car
In the event you break down on the road and need to have your vehicle towed, you can’t always stay with your car until the tow truck arrives. If you have children with you or you need to get to your destination quickly, you might need to call a cab or someone you know to retrieve you and let the tow truck arrive to remove your vehicle without you being present.

Before you leave your vehicle for the tow truck, do the following things to make the process much safer and more convenient.

Call the Police

Call the local authorities and let them know that your vehicle has broken down. Tell them where your car is located, and inform them that you have called a tow truck to retrieve your vehicle within a time frame given to you by your local towing company. You should call the police for two reasons.

Your Vehicle Is Less Likely to Be Impounded

When a vehicle is left vacant on the side of the road for more than 24 hours, the police will have the vehicle towed. Some states will tow an abandoned vehicle after 48 hours; the police department in your area will tell you how long you can leave your car unattended before the law gets involved.

If your car is blocking traffic, in front of a fire lane, or breaking another road violation, your vehicle can be impounded much sooner. Call the police to let them know you are aware of your vehicle being abandoned and that towing services are arriving soon to prevent your vehicle from being targeted by local authorities.

You Have a Record to Refer to if Your Car Is Vandalized

If for some reason your vehicle is broken into, vandalized, or stolen before towing services can arrive, you have a record that you notified police when you left it. This record is useful if you have to file a police report on your car's condition or if you need to file an insurance claim for damages while the vehicle was outside your care.

Call Your Insurance Company

Let your insurance company know that you are leaving your vehicle unattended while it awaits being towed by the towing company. Have the towing company's contact information ready to give to your auto insurance agent so they can keep tabs on when your car was transferred to a towing specialist's vehicle.

Remove All Valuables

Before vacating your vehicle, remove all valuables, including your purse, vehicle titles, and other important documents. Lock your vehicle and leave the keys in a predetermined location in the event your towing specialist needs them to put your car in neutral to move the vehicle safely.

Make Your Car Visible

Make your car noticeable to other drivers on the road and your tow truck driver by turning on your car's hazard lights, hanging a bright shirt or cloth from a window, and leaving the headlights on. Open your car's hood to let other drivers know your vehicle is broken down; the message will cause drivers to slow down to avoid hitting your vehicle.

Call Your Towing Company

Let your towing company know that you will not be with your vehicle when assistance arrives. Request an immediate phone call when the tow truck driver arrives at your vehicle and get an estimate for how long it will take to get your car to your home or other destination.

Ideally, you should stay with your car until towing services arrive. If you cannot do this, then cover your bases to protect yourself and your vehicle until towing services remove your vehicle from the road.
