What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down at Night

Admin • May 8, 2018
Car breakdown
There is never really a good time for your vehicle to break down, but certain times of the day can be worse than others. If you're on the road late at night, for example, the last thing that you probably want to deal with is a vehicle breakdown. If this does happen, follow these tips to stay safe while handling the situation.

Call a 24-Hour Towing Service

Many towing companies offer 24-hour services for situations just like these. After all, these professionals know that breakdowns and wrecks don't just happen during regular business hours. If you call a 24-hour towing service, you can have someone come out to tow your car to a safe place. Then, you can avoid leaving it on the side of the road, where it can be damaged.

In some cases, these companies also offer roadside services. This means that, depending on what is wrong with your vehicle, you might not need a tow at all. For example, these companies will sometimes bring gas or change a tire for you. This can be a good option if you want to get your car back up and running but don't know how to repair it yourself.

Turn on Your Hazard Lights

Once your car is off the road, make sure that you turn on your hazard lights right away. It can be difficult for motorists to see cars that are sitting on the side of the road, especially late at night, so you could be more at risk of your car being hit if you don't have your hazard lights on. Flip your hazard lights on to help alert drivers to your presence so that they can avoid hitting your vehicle.

If you have flares in your car's emergency kit, you can use these as well. If you have never used them before, there should be instructions on the flare that will tell you how to use it. Generally, you just have to remove the cap and strike the end of the flare against the cap, much like you would light a match. Just make sure that you hold it carefully and that you don't point the lit end at yourself.

Let Someone Know Where You Are

While you're waiting for the tow truck to arrive, you should let someone know where you are. In fact, ideally, you should call a friend or family member to come and wait with you for the tow truck driver and then take you home afterward.

If you feel particularly unsafe where you are waiting, don't be afraid to call the police to inform them of your situation and your location. Then, if something goes wrong, others will know about your approximate location and can send help.

Stay in the Car

Unless you know that you can get your car back up and running yourself — such as by changing a flat tire — it's generally a better idea to stay in your car. Then, you can lock the doors to stay safe and secure while you're waiting for help to arrive.

Keep an Eye on Your Surroundings

Whether you're sitting in your vehicle or if you are changing a tire, it's important to keep an eye on your surroundings. Keep your phone close at hand, and call for help if you find yourself in a dangerous situation.

Finding yourself on the side of the road with a broke-down car is not a pleasant situation to be in. If you follow these tips, though, you can help ensure that you stay safe. For reliable 24-hour towing services that you can count on, contact us at AA Wrecker Service so that we can help.
